The Beach
A long, graceful bay protected by a coral reef is Kailua’s delight. The nearly 4-mile-long stretch of ivory sand is made for strolling, and the weather and wave conditions can be just about perfect for swimming, kayaking, windsurfing and kitesurfing. South along the shore lies the exclusive enclave of Lanikai, with million-dollar views – and mansions to match.
Kailua is a beautiful beach town! With fabulous dining, shopping and activity choices - one never gets bored here. Kailua and Lanikai beach are huge highlights of our town, but there are also amazing eating and unique shopping experiences as well.
We would recommend a car, however Oahu is known for its amazing bus system with stops that can take you all over the island. Bus stop is just a few hundred feet away.
This property is a legally established dwelling that is rented for period of 30 consecutive days or more at any one time regardless of actual occupancy.

CANCELLATION after the balance is paid ( 30 days prior to arrival ) results in forfeiture of any collected money, except the guest s security deposit and cleaning fee (if applicable).
Collected money is non-refundable unless the home becomes unfit for habitation and no equivalent substitute can be obtained or the property and the entire length of stay reserved is re-booked at the same rate. If a portion of the rental time is re-booked at the same rate, a pro-rata refund will be made. All refunds of rental services payments, whether complete or pro-rata, will be subject to a deduction equal to as much as 20% of deposit(s) paid.
To protect against cancellations caused by certain unforeseen events, such as illness, we recommend that guests purchase travel insurance to assure refund of deposits paid.
Any CHANGES made to a booking after a confirmation has been issued will be assessed a $50.00 service fee. Acceptance of any change is subject to approval by Affordable Paradise and the homeowner.
This rental agreement is being entered into and shall be performed in the state of Hawaii, which shall be the proper venue for any legal proceedings concerning this agreement.
Affordable Paradise strongly recommends the purchase of travel insurance, as this will be the only way to recover deposits made and other expenses incurred should a cancellation become necessary.

CANCELLATION POLICY:
CANCELLATION after confirmation of booking results in forfeiture of the initial reservation deposit.
Cancellations received when a reservation is paid in full will be refunded on a prorate bases, based on our ability to rebook the canceled days, less the initial reservation deposit.

To protect your vacation, we do not overbook our rentals. In turn, we ask that you reserve an accommodation only for the dates you are willing to pay for.
Any changes made to a booking after a confirmation has been issued will be assessed a $50.00 alteration fee. Acceptance of any change is subject to approval by home owner / property manager.
Affordable Paradise role in any transaction is limited to being an intermediary between the Owner or Property Manager and the Traveler. We do not own or manage, nor do we contract for, any vacation rental property advertised on the Site. The owner was very friendly caring and accommodating and helpful as I had my purse stolen and used her address for new driver license and debit card and she brought it over as soon as it arrived.

3.0It was an unfortunate happening
Positive:
Something went wrong with the advertised property. I was on the Maui site to find accommodation. Kalama showed up and I thought that it was a suitable location for my purpose. As a consequence I made the reservation through you, Booking.com, and thought no more about it until I arrived in Maui. The names sounded similar and started to look for it under the designated road name but could not find the right address. It was late in the evening and had to find accommodation. The next day I determined I had accommodation on Oahu and not Maui. I had done I my research based on staying on Maui. How was the mistake made? Yes, the accommodation on Maui was very expensive and I will have a problem paying for it but also I have the bill for Oahu. I seek some compensation for it either from you or Kalama. I hope to hear from you soon. Arnold

I rated the room 5 stars because I found it to be exactly as advertised. The location is great and at the time I looked, the room represented the best value in Kailua, in my opinion. Barbara was very friendly but didn't impose.
The room is not fancy but it had everything I needed. One thing I particularly appreciated was the shower head. I used the fridge, TV, wi-fi, and coffee machine with no problems.
One thing others had mentioned which I found to be true is that it's pretty close quarters with the other guests. This did not bother me a bit, but I would recommend bringing earplugs just in case. (I did not need them when I was there.) For the same reason, I would suggest that the room isn't the best option for honeymooners. ;)

Barbara’s place was absolutely perfect for me. The bed is huge and super comfortable! It has all the things you need for a temporary stay - mini fridge, microwave, rice cooker, and outdoor grill. Barbara even let me use her washing machine and dryer. My absolute FAVORITE part though was the fact that I was literally a block from Kalama beach, which was never crowded and consistently breathtakingly beautiful at every sunrise. Would definitely stay here again and would recommend this place for anyone!

Barbara's place was the perfect location for our stay in Kailua as we were traveling with family and friends. Her place was a quick walk to a house where friends were staying which is where we spent the majority of our time (so close to the beach too!). As others have mentioned, this place is great for resting your head at night after a full day of activities, but not much more than that as it is just a bedroom. The bed was a bit too soft for my boyfriend, but Barbara was kind enough to provide us some futon mattresses as an alternative.

This place was the perfect home base for all of our adventures on Oahu! We didn't spend a lot of time in the room as we were always on the go, but when we were there at night and in the mornings it was very comfortable.
We saw Barbara often as we would come and go and she was always so nice and helpful! She also had things like beach chairs, snorkeling gear and towels we were able to all week which made our beach time so much better.
The only thing that caught me off guard the first night but that I got used to the rest of the week, was noise from the other vacation rental. There is an interior door shared btwn the Kalama room and Barbara's other rental that stays locked, but it's loose and you can hear everything through it. For instance, we heard dog barking & scratching, doors opening & closing, guests walking by. We were never worried about our privacy, we just got used to hearing other vacationers near. But if you plan to use this room as just a place to sleep btwn adventures you will be happy! Very cosy and sweet.

This is definitely a minimalist experience. Paper thin walls, we could hear both people on each side. Owner is very nice, lives attached to the room. The shower is extremely small, barely enough room to turn around. Things need updating, ie towels, sheets, etc. There is no bbq and the “lanai” is the owners back patio with a small screen. Loved the location close to Kailua town, but would not recommend.

This is a great place to stay if you want a simple place close to the beach. It was about a 5 minute walk to a beautiful, not-too-crowded beach and Barbara provides chairs and boogie boards for you to use, as well. It’s a short drive into the main area of Kailua that has grocery stores and restaurants. Barbara was very kind and we loved getting greeted by her dog when we packed up the car every morning!

I had a wonderful month-long stay at the Kalama studio! It is a great price, clean, comfy, and in a wonderful location! Barbra, the host, is absolutely amazing! She is so sweet and very accommodating. It is worth noting that there is no stove or hot plate, and that the patio is not directly attached to the studio itself. However, the patio is still easily accessible and convenient. I would highly recommend the Kalama studio and would stay here again!

Barbara, the on-site owner was the best. She was always very helpful and available, and at the same time not obtrusive at all. The Kalama unit was very clean and comfortable for 1-2 persons. The unit has a kitchenette with a coffee pot, microwave, mini refrigerator, and small sink. There is a flat screen tv with basic cable channels, and wifi. The king size bed was very comfortable and was one of the most important pluses of this rental. There are a couple small chairs and a table. The bathroom has a shower only.
Location was ideal and even though it was on a moderately busy street, noise level was low as the unit is set back from the street. The windows were always open and the noise was never an issue. Parking is tight and right outside the unit. It is a little over 1 mile into town and is a 15 minute walk and less than a 5 minute drive to restaurants, supermarkets, and stores. You can walk to the beach via a right of way in 5 minutes. Kailua Beach park is a 5 minute drive.
The only point I could wish for is a couple of more comfortable chairs to replace the current chairs.
I would definitely rent this unit again and is perfect for 1-2 persons. Kailua is so much of a better location than Honolulu especially with a hostess like Barbara Carvalho!

Comfortable and very clean room. The owner is very kind and thoughtful. While the room does not have a view it's only a 5 minute walk to the beach. Guests can also use the beach chairs and boards to use at the beach. The little kitchenette has all the supplies you need but not a stove...which we did not need anyway. We saved money by shopping locally and eating in our room for some meals. All in all a very good value I would stay there again.

Booked 4 nights with my mom and it was a great place for us to come back to too rest up after exploring all day. It's close to the beach at Kailua which is nice and less crowded than many other beaches. Plenty of good food options nearby and Barbara had beach chairs and towels for us to use which was great. We'd definitely come back!

5.0Very Nice Kailua Rental Studio
Auntie Barbara provides a very neat and clean sleeping room, with an attached bath and modest food preparation facilities (microwave, coffee maker, mini fridge, etc. - but no sink or stove). Her larger studio is right next door, and both units tie directly to the main house - each with a private entrance. She lets her guests enjoy the beautiful back yard. A small pool adds to the nice decor (altho guests can't swim in it). That's okay, since the very beautiful Kailua beach is only a pleasant 8-minute walk away. Despite its great charm, we never saw this beach crowded.
This rental is on a slightly busy street. But since the building is set back, street noise isn't an issue. The room air conditioner was a bit noisy, but it didn't stop us from sleeping. And Barbara's two very small, cute & friendly dogs are active watch dogs.
Barbara hails from California, but she's lived in this town a long time. She's very pleasant and gracious; we had some delightful chats with her. While she does a nice job of respecting your privacy, she also gave us some great dining recommendations and town perspectives.
If you want to spend lots of time in your room, the bigger unit might be a better fit. (As noted by others,the smaller unit doesn't have a good reading chair.) But if you want a nice room for just sleeping, watching a little TV and planning your day, this is a super choice at a thrifty price. Barbara is great. And Kailua / Lanikai, with it's great community feel and charming shopping area, was our favorite town on the entire island.

The room was impeccably clean and very true to the picture on your website. Barbara was always there to provide assistance and information as needed. She is a genuinely nice and honest person who will do everything to make your stay enjoyable! The only downside is that the walls are thin between the units but that is not Barbaras fault and the rest made up for it. Thanks again for everything, Annie

Our stay at the Kalama room was great. The location is in a great neighborhood with walking distance to the beach. The bed was very comfortable and the entire place was very clean and cozy. Barbara was the ideal hostess. She was very warm and welcoming and always available to answer questions or help. She even provided beach chairs and boogie boards. Her daughter was also very sweet and friendly. We even BBQed one afternoon in her patio. Everything was perfect.

The Kalama Room was comfortable, but for a couple only (it is small, but no need more for two!). The room is clean and we appreciated the BBQ ! The only thing I would change is to replace all the unnecessary items by hooks, shelves or other kind of support for the wet clothes from the beach.
