Great stay at the Banyan Guest House

Review submitted: September 02, 2017

Review from: Famlange from Enger, Germany

Date of Stay: August 2017

We enjoyed a wonderful week at the cottage. The outdoor space is very pleasant, the outdoor shower a real treat when returning from the beach. The cottage is very well appointed, and even with 4 people, we found there was enough room not to feel cramped. The bathroom is roomy, as is the kitchen. With so many windows to let a breeze through, we found the heat was never a problem. Check in and check out very easy, nice contact with Mary/Elly. About 5 minutes to the beach, great for morning coffee! We found it was a little too far from town to walk, but doable. Great beach living feeling in our favorite town Kailua. Mahalo nui loa!

Nice stay

Review submitted: August 08, 2017

Review from: Guest from City, State

Date of Stay: July 2017

We arrived late, but didn't have any trouble finding the way in at night.
The place is calm, close to the beach ???? and equipped with anything you need for a relaxing stay at Kailua. Beach towels and chairs, an icebox to keep your drinks cool and a fully equipped kitchen if you don't want to spend your money on restaurants. The bed is excellent, and the outdoor shower was perfect to wash away the sand.
There is a kind of terrace, but nothing you would spend a whole afternoon on, just a little space around the house to sit outside and enjoy a moment on your own.
Recommended, would stay here once again the next time.....

The Real Hawaii

Review submitted: July 19, 2017

Review from: Marie from Melbourne, Australia

Date of Stay: July 2017

It was so lovely to be at Banyan Guest House! Greeted by our intelligent hosts. The house, formally a print studio meant we were surrounded by original art work in the Hawaiian theme. We were provided with towels, beach play equipment, toiletries and freshly grounded coffee! Our children loved watching the all important movies that were filmed in Hawaii and playing the authentic Hawaiian music each day was bliss. Our hosts had made a book of Kailua featuring all the best places to eat, shop and go to. Free Wifi was useful too. We were so close to beach and supermarkets that we didn't need a car for the 5 nights we were there. The only downside was the beds were rock hard so the first nights sleep was like a nightmare. Surprisingly though, the following nights sleep were fine so we were able to adapt. Thank you and we hope to return some day.

Awesome space for groomsmen

Review submitted: January 16, 2017

Review from: Will from Honolulu, HI

Date of Stay: December 2016

We booked the Banyan Tree House for a few nights as overflow room for a few of our groomsmen during our wedding week. We could not have been happier with the space, both in terms of logistics and comfort.

The space has one queen-size bed and one full-size futon, if memory serves correctly. There is a full bathroom (with shower) as well as an outdoor heated shower - both of which made getting ready for the wedding so easy for a large group of guys.

The patio outside, shaded by lush greenery, has a small table perfect for breakfast or simple evening relaxing. While we didn't use it, the kitchen seemed well-equipped.

Perhaps the highlight of this location is its proximity to Kailua's beautiful beaches - less than a mile from several! Plenty of beach towels and other equipment were included with the rental, which was perfect for beach days.

Overall, this is a perfect space for two to four people in simple, yet super comfortable, accommodations. Located in a quiet neighborhood in Kailua, you'll find the peace and relaxation you need here. Remember to be respectful of the homeowners around you - houses are built very close together here in Hawai'i!

We had no needs from the property owner during our stay, but she seemed very responsive and on top of things. Book this space if you're considering it!

Lovely well-equiped private studio close to the beach, full of island tips

Review submitted: December 06, 2016

Review from: JB Leveque from Vancouver, BC

Date of Stay: 17-24 November 2016

We loved our stay at Mary and Elly's guest house. The feel of the studio was wonderful, plenty of space for the two of us, comfortable firm bed (we love firm!), never too hot, island art all around, tons of local information, books, reviews, cds, dvs, beach gear... we really felt welcome from the first minute we got there, even though it was super late. Our privacy was wonderful, the proximity to the beach made it very convenient for me to go kiteboarding early, allowing my spouse to walk there later to join me. It also meant we could hear the distant sound of waves at night, we loved it and only wish we could have stayed longer. A very minor downside : the vibration noise of the small fridge at night, and possibly the spotty wi-fi (but for ourselves this one was not an issue, disconnecting is good!)

Beautiful hideaway close to the beach

Review submitted: November 26, 2016

Review from: Chris from Olympia, WA

Date of Stay: November 2016

This former studio is filled with and surrounded by small pieces of art collected by the owners. The net effect is attractive and welcoming. In the back is a private lanai that is perfect for morning coffee or an evening drink. The kitchen is small but sufficient for light meal preparation. There is a private outdoor shower that has inspired us to install one at our next home! We liked the ability to walk to the beach or to the center of Kailua. We will tell our friends to stay here when in Kailua!

Banyan House

Review submitted: July 13, 2016

Review from: Guest from Seattle, WA

Date of Stay: June 2016

Our stay at The Banyan House was lovely. The property provided us with a wonderful retreat for our beach holiday on Oahu. The house is so close to Kailua and Lanikai Beaches and a just a short drive to Honolulu. The house is well appointed with everything we needed. The screened doors (didn't even miss not having AC) were lovely allowing us to enjoy the scent of beautiful flowers growing in the garden and to listen to the birds as the trade winds cooled us. Even without laundry facilities, we were able to go to the laundromat in Kailua town to take care of our wash. If I had to make a few suggestions, I would recommend new bed pillows and a 2nd set of beach towels (only because we went to the beach every day and the towels came with us). Mary and Elly were great to communicate with and booking was easy. We look forward to our next visit already and miss everything about our island holiday stay at the Banyan House.

Review from: Guests Susan & Jay from Austin, TX

Date of Stay: December 2015

Very conveniently located to beach, Kalapawai market, Kailua shopping & restaurants. Spacious room. Very nice hosts tho we barely saw them so plenty of privacy. Their art work (much original by the hosts or relatives to the hosts was lovely). They even presented us with a parting gift. A couple of minor issues like a couple of burned out lights & slow draining bathroom sink & (for my 70 year body) a bed that was a little hard but none of this was detrimental to our stay. We would recommend & stay there again. In fact, a local (Honolulu) friend stopped by for awhile & might be interested for visiting guests. We used to be Hawaii residents so it was fun to be back.

I had very relaxing and peaceful time at the Banyan Guest House. Mary and Elly are such wonderful hosts. They treat guests as their friends:)I really felt like home there:) The gust house is surrounded by garden, which brings in peaceful and relaxing energy. The location couldn't be better - 5min to the beach! And only 15min walk to the town centre. The last but not the least, the art works and arty atomasphere at Bnayna Guest House is uniquely beautiful.

My boyfriend and I spent a week in the comfortable Banyan Guest House and loved it. The location is perfect, and we were able to relax in paradise while feeling at home. The room is spacious, clean, and decorated beautifully. The kitchenette allowed us to cook our own meals, and we enjoyed eating on the table in the garden. The guest house is located behind the hosts' house, but feels very private. The hosts were kind and welcoming. We would definitely stay again!!

Date of Stay: August 2015

With my boyfriend, we spent 3 peaceful and pleasant days at the Banyan guest house. Elly is a nice guest, very helpful and flexible about the check in and check out hours. She has designed her guest room with a lot of taste : the decoration with the works of art is beautiful and everything is well thought. The photos do not lie ! You have the impression to be invited in a friend's house. The well equiped kitchen is also very useful. And the whole place is calm, green and perfectly located close to the beach, a nice coffee shop and downtown (nice farmers market some days). In a word, just what we needed after the crowded Honolulu !

We stayed for 3 nights at the end of a big trip on the way home to Sydney. Mary and Elly have a lovely guest house at the back of their place. Mary was there to welcome us as we arrived; she is friendly but not at all intrusive. The accommodation is really lovely with lots of timber and lovely artwork including all the curtains, cushions etc. It is a short walk to the beach which is beautiful. The local market has a large array of things to buy and their deli has really yummy food. The Banyan Guest House is ideal for those who want a peaceful break away from resorts and with a real locals feel. A friendly area and I recommend it highly.

We had a great time! The studio suite was quiet, private, and nicely appointed, the kitchen came with coffee(!), the bed was comfortable, and the local art decorating the walls was a nice touch. Kailua Beach was an easy 3-block walk and we walked there most days for sunrise and sunset beach strolls. Downtown restaurants were a little farther, but still easily within walking distance. Elly and Mary gave us some good tips on local restaurants, too. We would definitely like to return some day. It was a good value and a nice spot. We're so glad we didn't choose to stay in Waikiki!

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Banyan Guest House, it was comfortable and private with close proximity to beautiful beaches and a nice grocery store and deli, with good salads and sandwiches.
I would definitely stay there again, it was a good location for traveling around the East and North shores and about a 30 minute drive from the airport. Nice to have lots of coffee and other necessities provided. I was happy I had chosen to stay in Kailua and not in the big city with all the crazy traffic and parking issues. Mahalo, Sheila

Our stay at the Banyan House far exceeded our expectations, such an oasis of calm and serenity, and so close to the beach. Loved the privacy, including the area surrounding the rental outdoors, very cozy. In spite of the summertime heat, we stayed comfortable, although a suggestion would be the addition of a floor fan, since the ceiling fan primarily useful for the bed. All the amenities were useful, the artistry and layout of the Banyan House was outstanding. We felt we had out own slice of paradise all to ourselves at the Banyan House.

My husband and I absolutely loved the Banyon Guest House. The gardens on three sides provide privacy, the cottage is full of art as well as the gardens and so peaceful. What a lovely treat arriving at the Banyan Guest House after our long travel to Kailua, Oahu.
Our hosts were polite, but respectful by giving us privacy although making themselves available if needed.
The Banyan Guest House was tastefully decorated with a tropical Hawaii theme with many hand-made extra touches.
We had plenty of room in our studio condo and loved the private garden entry away from the main house with just a short walk to the beach.

We would not hesitate to stay again next time we are in Oahu.

I would highly recommend staying at the Banyan Guest House in Kailua, Oahu. It is a short walk to beautiful Kailua Beach and to downtown Kailua. You don't need to head into busy, traffic filled Honolulu for anything. The property was well maintained and the furnishings made it very comfortable. The extra beach towels, beach gear and maps were greatly appreciated. Loved the selection of island music I could play on the portable CD player. The owners thought of everything.

Review from: John and Michelle Peterson from Marshalltown, IA

Date of Stay: June 2013

We stayed in Kailua at the Banyan Guest House toward the end of June and I'm so glad I found this beautiful place. The gorgeous wooden floor, open sliding doors to beautiful garden lanai's, great very comfortable queen size bed and all the owners beautiful artwork inside and out....loved seeing the collection of such neat things. Our first night in Kailua, we attended Chief's Luau and the location of the Banyan Guest House was perfect and so easy to find our way back not knowing the area and in the dark! Our first full day was spent at the beaches...we spent a little time at Lanikai and Kailua Beaches, and then toward mid-afternoon took a quick trip over to Hanauma Bay to snorkel for a few hours. It was so easy to get out to Kamehameha Hwy and around to Hanauma Bay...took maybe 15 minutes all together. When we got back, it was great having the outdoor shower with hot water to wash away all the sand and salt. Relaxing afterward, we listened to some of the ample CD's of Hawaiian music that were provided. We had our own snorkel equipment but the owners had everything there that we could have possibly needed. Loved that they had a great book of attractions and places to see and eat while in Kailua. On our 2nd day in Kailua, it was overcast and rainy, so we decided to take that day and head over to climb Diamond Head, visit Punchbowl Cemetery and take the drive up Mount Tantalus for incredible views of Honolulu and Diamond Head, and then we took the Pali Hwy. back to Kailua stopping at the Pali Overlook. Staying at the Banyan Guest House was such a perfect location and didn't take time at all to get to Diamond Head and all the other attractions. Our 2nd night, we were so relaxed from spending the day at the beaches and snorkeling, we chose to have pizza from Bob's Pizzaria which was just 2 blocks away. Great pizza! For our last night in Kailua we chose to eat at Buzz's Steakhouse which has been family owned for over 50 years and was fabulous! The short walk to the beach was perfect for catching the sunrise or taking those late night walks on the beach under the full moon.

We knew that the owners were there if we should have need of anything, but it felt like our own private little get away in beautiful Hawaii and we hope to someday return to the Banyan Guest House again!
